Abstract

Metakriloil mangostin berhasil disintesis, namun MIP fungsional belum sepenuhnya terbentuk. ------ Alpha-mangostin is a xanthone compound found in the pericarp of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) that is difficult to obtain at high purity through conventional separation methods. A covalent-interaction-based Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) has the potential to improve purification selectivity. This study aimed to synthesize a methacryloyl mangostin monomer through the esterification of alpha-mangostin with methacrylic anhydride. The method included synthesis using a DMAP catalyst, purification by liquid–liquid extraction and gravity column chromatography, characterization by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR, and ester value determination, followed by precipitation polymerization using EGDMA and AIBN. TLC monitoring showed that the esterification reaction at the 8 hours. FTIR characterization revealed the emergence of an ester carbonyl band at 1744.35 cm⁻¹, with an ester value of 235.498 mg KOH/g and a degree of substitution of 2.42. Polymerization yielded a low amount of polymer (0.026 g from 0.4 g of monomer), attributed to incomplete monomer solubility and suboptimal nitrogen purging. The polymer's FTIR spectrum still exhibited O–H, C=O, and C=C bands, indicating that the template remained present within the polymer matrix. Methacryloyl mangostin was successfully synthesized; however, a fully functional MIP was not yet obtained, so further optimization is required.
