Abstract

------- Catechin is a polyphenolic compound that exhibits antioxidant activity and has the potential to be developed into a topical cream preparation. The use of emulsifiers in cream formulations plays an important role in producing preparations with physical characteristics that meet the required standards. This study aimed to determine the effect of varying concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine (TEA) on the physical characteristics of catechin isolate cream and to determine the optimum formula using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method. The study was conducted by varying the concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine in several cream formulations. The evaluations included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, emulsion type, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion tests. Formula optimization was performed based on pH and viscosity responses using the SLD method. The results showed that variations in the concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine affected the physical characteristics of the cream preparation, particularly the pH and viscosity responses. The optimum formula selected was Formula 4, consisting of 17% stearic acid and 3% triethanolamine, as it produced physical characteristics that met the parameters for topical cream preparations. The optimum formula resulted in a predicted viscosity value of 44,152.6 cPs and a pH value of 7.5, with a desirability value of 1.000. Based on the results, the Simplex Lattice Design method can be applied to determine the optimum formula of catechin isolate cream with physical characteristics that meet the requirements of topical preparations
