Abstract
------ Brazilin is the major bioactive compound in sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) that is still mixed with various other components in the extract; therefore, a purification process is required. This study was intended to modify bentonite for the purification of polyphenolic compounds, with brazilin serving as the model compound. This study aimed to determine the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of organobentonite, identify the optimum pH and contact time for brazilin extract purification, and evaluate the purity of the purified brazilin using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The purification process was carried out using CTAB-modified organobentonite through an adsorption mechanism based on ion exchange. The results showed that the organobentonite had a cation exchange capacity of 40.6 meq/100 g, and FTIR characterization confirmed the successful modification of bentonite into organobentonite. The optimum purification conditions were obtained at pH 7 with a 10-minute contact time. UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis showed that the purified sample exhibited a spectral profile more closely resembling the brazilin standard in the absorption region of 450 nm, with an increase in brazilin purity of 48,22%. Based on these findings, organobentonite demonstrated potential as an adsorbent for improving brazilin purity.
