Abstract

--- Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a herbaceous plant in the Apiaceae family that originates from the Mediterranean and Middle East. Celery contains apigenin (4 ′, 5,7-trihydroxyflavone, C15H10O5) which is a secondary metabolite of the flavonoid flavone class. Apigenin has been widely used for the treatment of various types of diseases. The main objective of this review is not only understanding the chemical content, and analytical methodology, but also the use of the secondary metabolite apigenin as a therapeutic drug to be used as a new drug. The method used in this research is to study and analyze research obtained by both Indonesian and foreign journals using websites such as PubMed, Google Schoolar, NCBI. From the 70 journals obtained, they were analyzed and screened, so that 45 journals were collected based on inclusion criteria. Apigenin can be isolated using column chromatography with qualitative analysis using TLC. Apigenin has 10 pharmacological activities, most of which have been studied as an anticancer, preclinical trials and clinking tests have been carried out, apigenin pharmacokinetic phases of which are absorbed in the intestine, distributed throughout tissues, metabolism in the liver, excreted through feces and urine. From these data, apigenin can be used for development of new drugs.
