Abstract
---- Tyrosinase inhibitors are compounds that can inhibit the process of melanin formation in the epidermis layer so that they can be used in cosmetic products as whitening agents. Tyrosinase inhibitors that have been popular in the community are hydroquinone and kojic acid. However, hydroquinone and kojic acid are known to be carcinogenic. Zingiberaceae is a family of plants native to Indonesia and its utilization has been widely used as traditional medicine. This review aims at gathering information on the potential of Zingiberaceae family extracts as inhibitors of the diphenolase tyrosinase mechanism using online searches of several scientific publications both nationally and internationally. The results used from several literature studies show that plants from the Zingiberaceae family have activity as tyrosinase inhibitors. The rhizome and genus Curcuma of Zingiberaceae are the most widely reported as tyrosinase inhibitors. Of this genus, the most likely to have tyrosinase inhibitory activity was the 70% ethanol extract of Curcuma mangga rhizome with ICsa 0.07 mg/ml. The ICso of kojic acid in this review as a positive control is in the range of 0.01-0.04 mg/ml. The most widely used extraction method in testing the potential for tyrosinase inhibitors from Zingiberaceae is the maceration method. The phenol group, including the forgotten flavonoids and anthocyanins, is a group of compounds that act as tyrosinase inhibitors from the Zingiberaceae family.
