Abstract

--- The ginseng plant has gained wide recognition in various countries, especially in China, as an effective traditional herb in treating various ailments. Javanese ginseng leaves are known to have the potential to increase breast milk production, increase appetite, as a medicine for ulcers and aphrodisiac (strong medicine). This study focused on the acute toxicity test of Javanese ginseng herb extract against Artemia salina Leach shrimp larvae using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The BSLT method was chosen because it has been widely used as a prescreening of active compounds in plant extracts. This method is considered simple, fast, cheap, easy to perform, and representative results. The purpose of this study was to assess the safety level of the use of Javanese ginseng herb extracts and identify the potential activity of compounds contained in Javanese ginseng herb extracts. The results showed that the three extracts of Javanese ginseng herb had different LC50 (50% lethal concentration) values, namely 30.153 µg/mL for 96% ethanol extract, 35.657 µg/mL for 70% ethanol extract, and 44.398 µg/mL for 50% ethanol extract. It can be concluded that Javanese ginseng herb extract has cytotoxic potential against Artemia salina Leach larvae, which indicates its potential use as an anticancer agent.
