Abstract
Metanol atau metil alkohol adalah senyawa kimia yang termasuk golongan alkohol paling sederhana, namun sangat beracun dan berbahaya bagi kesehatan manusia. Beberapa sumber yang banyak menghasilkan limbah senyawa metanol diantaranya industri farmasi, industri kimia, industri kertas, dan penyulingan minyak bumi. Senyawa metanol ini merupakan zat kimia berbahaya, maka perlu ditangani dengan baik sebelum dilepaskan ke lingkungan. Penanggulangan dampak pencemaran senyawa metanol ini menggunakan metode biologi yaitu bioremediasi. Pada dasarnya metanol merupakan salah satu senyawa organik yang dapat didegradasi oleh mikroba. Bakteri digunakan sebagai agen bioremediasi karena dapat hidup di lingkungan ideal maupun ekstrem. Beberapa jenis bakteri yang diketahui memiliki kemampuan untuk mendegradasi senyawa metanol diantaranya bakteri dari genus Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Methylobacterium, Sporomusa, Methanomonas, Methylococcus, Ochrobacterium, Thermotoga, Methanospirillum, Methanobacterium, dan Microbacterium. Bakteri-bakteri tersebut memiliki kemampuan untuk memanfaatkan metanol sebagai sumber karbon dan energi. Ulasan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi yang berkaitan dengan teknik bioremediasi metanol, mikroorganisme yang digunakan, dan kondisi optimum bakteri dalam mendegradasi senyawa metanol. ---- Methanol or methyl alcohol is a chemical compound that belongs to the simplest alcohol class, but is very toxic and dangerous to human health. Sources of producing methanol compound waste include the pharmaceutical industry, the chemical industry, the paper industry, and petroleum refining. Methanol compound is a dangerous chemical, it needs to be handled properly before being released into the environment. The prevention of the impact of this methanol compound pollution uses a biological method, namely bioremediation. Basically, methanol is an organic compound that can be degraded by microbes. Bacteria are used as bioremediation agents because they can live in ideal or extreme environments. Several types of bacteria are known to have the ability to degrade methanol compounds, including bacteria from the genus Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Methylobacterium, Sporomusa, Methanomonas, Methylococcus, Ochrobacterium, Thermotoga, Methanospirillum, Methanobacterium, and Microbacterium. These bacteria have the ability to utilize the methanol as a source of carbon and energy. This review aims to provide information related to methanol bioremediation techniques, the microorganisms used, and the optimum conditions for bacteria to degrade methanol compounds.
